2026 Abusir Archaeological Field School

Thanks to your support, AERA’s 2026 Archaeological Field School at the Lost City of the Pyramids was a great success! The 24 new graduates, all archaeologists serving as Inspectors for Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism Antiquities (MoTA), join hundreds of previous AERA field school graduates working at heritage sites across Egypt.

Building on this success, we are excited to announce AERA’s participation in a second 2026 field school. From September 5 to October 29, AERA will partner with Dr. Miroslav Barta and Dr. Mohamed Megahed of the Czech Institute of Egyptology at Charles University in Prague (CIE) to train a new group of MoTA inspectors at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Abusir.

During this intensive eight-week beginner’s program, students will complete training in six core modules: excavation, 3D photogrammetry and survey, ceramics, material culture, osteology, and environmental science. Every student will receive hands-on training from AERA’s professional archaeologists in stratigraphic excavation and single-context planning. Students will also receive in-depth instruction in report writing, photography, field and finds drawing, and lab management from AERA and CIE fieldwork team members.

AERA’s field schools are vital to our mission of strengthening professional capacity and equipping Egyptian archaeologists with the tools to manage their own heritage.  Your donation can help us make this new series of large-scale excavations and field schools possible. The AERA Field School Program

Field School Students

AERA’s Field Schools have trained over 400 Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism (MoTA) archaeologists in the best practices of scientific archaeology.

Our field school program empowers Egyptian archaeologists in the study of their heritage by equipping them with the skills to excavate, record, analyze, and publish material throughout Egypt. Our graduates have pursued advanced degrees, managed archaeological projects, taken leading positions in the MoTA, and taught in AERA Field Schools and MoTA training centers.

The Heit el-Ghurab Archaeology Preserve

Heit el-Ghurab

Our long-term goal is to establish the Heit el-Ghurab Archaeology Preserve as a permanent research and training ground for Egyptian archaeologists.

The archaeology of settlement sites like Heit el-Ghurab is challenging. Learning on a complex ancient settlement site provides our field school students with skills they can apply to tombs, temples, and any other kind of excavation site in Egypt.
